Your Questions About Car Stereo Installation Kits

Chris Your Questions About Car Stereo Installation Kits

Chris asks…

Where can I buy installation kits for a car stereo in a store besides best buy? I don’t want to wait on mail.?

I need one for a 2003 Hyundai Sonata double din. Best Buy only caries single din. Do I HAVE to have a installation kit for my car? If I change my mind about installing it myself, where is a good place to have it installed?

latitude answers:

Find a local custom car audio place. They carry installation kits. Sometimes you can make a deal with them and they will throw in the installation kit for a lower price. Call around and find the best price. Then, do a research online on the places you called to see if they have good reviews. You don’t want some cheapo installation place who hire non-certified installers to work on your car. Do your research!

I have a 94 camaro and when I bought it, it came with an aftermarket head unit and I haven’t looked at it or anything but the radio and everything works so if I want to install a new head unit then will I need to accessories to install it?

Nancy Your Questions About Car Stereo Installation Kits

Nancy asks…

Where can I purchase a car stereo mounting kit?

I have a 2004 corolla and I recently purchased an aftermarket car stereo that I can connect my Ipod to. However I need an installation kit that the stereo fits in to fill the gap left by the much larger stock stereo. I live in newfoundland, Canada and I don’t know of any auto accessory shops that carry that kind of equipment. I tried NAPA auto parts and they don’t carry them. Would a Toyota dealership carry them? Also any Canadian auto accessory websites would be appreciated.

latitude answers:

You can just go to Walmart and get one.

Carol Your Questions About Best Car Audio

Carol asks…

What is the best car audio out there for a good price?

I’m looking to install a great car audio system in my new car. I want some sub woofers (preferably two 10″) and good overall speakers. I don’t want to spend too much money. What would be the best setup?

latitude answers:

I’d recommend a little online research at a few of the dedicated car audio sites, some online equipment retailers, and perhaps a visit to one or more of your local car audio shops.

You’ll find a mind boggling variety of equipment. Some that is so low priced that it seems too good to be true. It is. And some that is priced into the stratosphere.

What you want is what sounds good to you at a price you can afford, and that fits your vehicle.

There are many reputable and trusted brands in car audio. Alpine, Infinity, Rockford-Fosgate, Kicker, JBL, Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio, JVC, MTX, Kenwood, and Pioneer. They generally have a good mix from entry-level up to higher quality, better sounding, higher priced products.

There are manufacturers of “high-end” car audio like JL Audio, RE, Morel, Focal, and U.S. Amps.

There’s also a lower end of suppliers, really importers or marketers that sell mostly based on inflated ratings and really low prices. Boss, Pyle, Lanzar, Legacy, and Visonik fall into this category.

Alpine has an excellent combination of selection, quality, reliability, value, and price for everything needed, head units, speakers, amplifiers, sound processors, and subwoofers. Kicker and Rockford-Fosgate have excellent speakers, amps, and subs. Likewise Boston Acoustics and Infinity. From budget priced to full featured, JVC, Pioneer, and Kenwood head units are reliable and reasonably priced.

Ruth Your Questions About Car Audio Forum

Ruth asks…

Why does my subwoofer sound muffled?

I know this isn’t car audio, but this forum always seems more active and it’s very similar. I have a speaker system that I plug into my computer in my dorm. My subwoofer is next to my desk and storage boxes. So three of the six sides are against a surface (floor, desk, boxes). The front, back, and the side with the port are all clear of anything. When I’m at my desk, and near it, you can’t even tell it’s there. But when you walk 5 feet away, or even down the hall, it sounds ten times louder. Any tips?
@audiogod – It’s a preloaded computer speaker setup so the subwoofer itself just has plugs for the two satellite speakers. As far as putting it in the wall, I’m not sure how possible that is because the cords are not very long.

latitude answers:

If possible try “corner loading” the sub woofer. Place it in a corner so that you have the floor and two walls as boundaries. This will give you a 6 dB increase in SPL.

Make SURE that your satellite speakers are wired in phase with one another (+) to (+) and (-) to (-).

Having one of them out of phase will cancel out the low frequencies but will sound OK “down the hall”.

I’m betting that it’s a phase issue.

How much should I charge for self-help advice monthly subscription?

Each month I will send out a 1 hour dvd on advice to help
people overcome social challenges (that I faced and overcome)
1 audio cd of the dvd (so people can listen to while relaxing, driving
in car) a monthly newsletter and access to a members only forum
so members can ask question and be part of a community of like
minded people.

latitude answers:

I’d suggest $1.00 to start. I realize that sounds not much but you need to get your advice and words out there. If it is worth more you can slowly ratchet the price up. That’s my opinion. Good luck.

Towanda. You’re correct. There would have to be a legally correct and well crafted disclaimer on all advice dispensed by this lady. Without a degree and professional licenses her advice would be quite illegal and subject to lawsuit. Even pros like shrinks and social workers are constantly under threat of lawsuit.

Mark Your Questions About Car Audio Forum

Mark asks…

why does round port exceeds subs box size?

I have seen subwoofer boxes with a round port that´s longer than the box itself. Why does this happen? what are the pros and cons of doing this kind of ports?
Look at the pic on this link for a visual aid http://www.google.com/imgres?q=long+port+subwoofer+box&um=1&hl=es&sa=N&tbm=isch&tbnid=oh7RSHtuFmMfWM:&imgrefurl=http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/car-audio/104101-amp-2.html&docid=gN5rUpsIXbwsOM&w=1024&h=768&ei=Xt1STpjxJsXksQLwkf3DBg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=345&vpy=196&dur=1128&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=145&ty=150&page=6&tbnh=166&tbnw=224&start=41&ndsp=8&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:41&biw=1093&bih=510

latitude answers:

The larger diamater the port, typically the better the sound quality and the lower the likelihood there is of port noise. BUT the bigger the diameter, the longer the port needs to be (also, the smaller the box the longer the port needs to be). Plus, if you want an enclosure tuned low (lets say 25hz) then you are going to need a longer port as well.

So if for example you have a 2cuft box that you want tuned to 25hz and you have a 3″ diameter port then you would need a port that is 13″ long. But if you want a 4″ port (to reduce likelihood of port noise) then you need a port that is 24″ long. So sometimes boxes are built in such a way that, in order to have a particular port length and tuning frequency, the port needs to be really long and the only way to get a long port in a particular box may be to have it stick out or to have it make a right-angle turn inside the box.

I think the main reason people do it like that picture is because it’s easier/cheaper than doing a right-angle AND it allows you to use one single straight piece which (at least in theory) gives you better sound.

Your Questions About Cars Audio Systems Brands

Donna Your Questions About Cars Audio Systems Brands

Donna asks…

When building a car audio system is it better to be brand consistent or to mix brands?

latitude answers:

As long as the brands are good quality, there is nothing wrong with mixing.

In fact, there is no benefit to matching brands. I prefer a mix myself, as some companies make good subs, but not amps, vice versa.

Lisa Your Questions About Cars Audio Systems Brands

Lisa asks…

Upgrading my Jeeps audio system, brands?

I’ve been looking into upgrading my Jeep Wranglers speakers and stereo for a while now, and I finaly have the cash to do it… I’ve been looking on Crutchfield.com for all the speakers and decks that fit, but I’m not sure on all the brand names.

Here are the brand names I’ve been looking at, I will be buying mid priced, around 400-500 for the whole system, so what brand has the best low-mid priced gear?

Heres what I’ve been looking at.
Alpine (speakers/deck)
Kenwood (speakers/deck)
Infinity (speakers)
Polk (speakers)

Notice I say speakers or speakers/deck… no infinity or polk decks fit in my jeep… for that matter, I’m not sure if they make decks… do they? But, thats kinda beside the point, so, what are your recommendations?

One last thing, is it okay to mix brands between the speakers and deck? Like if I got alpine speakers, would it be okay to get, say, a kenwood deck?

thanks ahead of time for all of everyones help, especially for car audio newbies like myself, let me know if you need any more info.

latitude answers:

For the deck, stick with brands like Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine. Don’t be lured in by the cheap decks from brands like Dual and Power Acoustik. (Polk and Infinity do not make decks, fyi.)

Out of the speaker brands you listed, Infinity would definitely be the way to go. Other brands like MTX, Kicker, Boston Acoustics all make very nice speakers.

Also, it is absolutely okay, and often recommended, to mix up speakers/ decks.

Check out Sonic Electonix, too, they have great prices, and a great customer service line.

Laura Your Questions About Cars Audio Systems Brands

Laura asks…

Is Audiobahn a good brand for a good car audio system with lots of bass?

If not, then what are some good brands?

latitude answers:

Stay away from Audiobahn.

I recommend Infinity (speakers and amps), Polk (speakers), Audioque (amps and subs), Alpine (head unit, subs, speakers and subs), Rockford Fosgate (subs and amps), MTX (subs and amps), Memphis (subs and amps), Kenwood (speakers), US Amps (amps), Sundown Car Audio (amps and subs), Eclipse (HEAD UNITS, amps, subs) and tons more are out there.

Hifonics deserves a reluctant mention. Their prices are cheap, but they have mixed reviews on their products; people either think they are great or total crap.

I recommend you go to http://www.caraudio.com/forum/ and read posts in the forums to get an idea of what are good brands, then research on eBay and online stores to see what you can afford in your budget.

Brands to stay away from:
Audiobahn
Lanzar
Boss
Pyle
Sony (their head units are half-decent, everything else SUXXORS)
Dual
Jensen
and many more…

Basically, if you are looking at something that costs much less than other products, the cheaper item is probably crap.

Do some research, save up your money and shop around.

Below is a *minimum* budget for a high-quality system, not including installation, tax or shipping:
- Head Unit $150
-2 pairs of coaxial speakers $80 each, 50W+ RMS
- 1 amp to drive the speakers, 4x50W+ RMS $150
- 1 subwoofer $100
- 1 amp to drive the subwoofer $175
- 4 guage power and ground cable $100
- 2 Distrubution blocks- one for ground, one for power $20

Total $855

Keep in mind, you don’t have to buy and install everything all at once. Do it in stages like this:

1) The head unit
2) The wiring and distribution blocks
3) The speakers
4) The amp for the speakers
5) The sub
6) The amp for the sub

Enjoy!

One last note:

Make sure you design and build your own sub enclosure. DO NOT BUY A PRE-MADE ENCLOSURE. They are crap!!!

Go here to deisgn your own subwoofer enclosure: http://reaudio.com/speaker_box/LPort_Box_Calc.html

Sandra Your Questions About Cars Audio Systems Brands

Sandra asks…

Car audio system help needed, what brands should i pick and how much should i spend?

I am looking into buying a good system for my car. I love listening to loud rap music, and i want a system that can put out some serious sound. However i don’t know much about car audio. It will be going into a 1999 Ford Explorer. I don’t want to get ripped off and theres only so much im willing to spend, about a thousand dollars. So give me your feedback on what i should buy. I know i want some subs and new speakers, but i need help. So gimme ideas.

latitude answers:

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking the more money they spend, the better the system they will get for their car. For a thousand bucks, you can get a kick butt setup but you don’t necessarily have to spend that much.

I had a couple 12 inch MTX subs and they punched loud enough for the rear end of my car to vibrate and my license plate to oscillate loudly. You could hear me coming from a block away and I was using a small Alpine amp.

The most important thing you can consider when buying a couple of subs is that the AMP will be driving all of the music. The amp is far more important than what speakers you chose. The cleaner the power source from the amp, the louder and clearer the bass. I recommend buying a Kenwood Excelon or Alpine MRP-1000 amp. Don’t skimp on the amp quality or your bass output will be like crap when its playing loud. The Kenwood will sound clear and loud, while the Alpine seems to have more muddy and rich bass response for rap music.

KENWOOD: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113X1200M/Kenwood-Excelon-X1200M.html?tp=115

ALPINE: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500MRP1000/Alpine-MRP-M1000.html?o=p&tp=115

Once you get a high quality mono amp with lots of clean power, the speakers are easy to pick. If you like tight accurate bass, go with the Infinity, Polk, or Kenwood. If you like loud rumbling bass, go with MTX or Rockford Fosgate. The speakers really don’t matter as much as the amp thats driving them. Probably any 12 inch speakers of decent quality will be satisfactory. Just check the wattage rating and make sure its not cheap crap.

Q Logic bass boxes are good quality if you need to buy an enclosure.

Here’s a link to a total budget priced system with MTX 12 inch speakers and an amp if you want to save some money.

Thats just crazy…you have stuff all accross the board….
Getting things cheap is one thing…but getting subs that dont match? You have the ground shaker 10″ and a pioneer 10″….why not just get two of one sub?
And the amp wont be suitable for more than one 10 ” sub…as far as reaching the potential power of your subs…if that is the case then just get the one 10″ esq and the pioneer amp you have listed there….otherwise….

Ehh not really a DECENT setup…it’ll work….but not be great.

Are these car audio brands good?????

Well I am looking through the internet wanting to buy some car audio stuff and I came across these brands;

KINGWOOD
SPEAKER CITY
MAX TURBO
YOKOHAMA
SANSUI
US AUDIO

Are any of these brands any good especially Kingwood and Max Turbo because there are so much of their products on the internet for sale.

latitude answers:

Sorry, all JUNK especially max turbo! The only brand I would even remotely consider if I was desperate is US Audio and sansui….Stay away from them if you dont want to waste money.Im suprised their still in business….I bet they are dirt cheap…right?Thats because they are hurting for buyers!

UPDATE:For those of you who dont know these brands…you gotta be old like me LOL to know them. You guys should see the inside of a MAX TURBO amp….they will have a 2 ft long amp/heatsink and ONLY ON 1 side the cicuit board is about 5 to 6 inches x 5″…Its a joke. They make the amp look HUGE when its really a POS…NOT CEA-compliant to say the least!I think they will put out mass power at about 10% THD LOL

Sharon Your Questions About Car Audio Speakers Sale

Sharon asks…

Picking out an amp, case, and wires for subwoofers?

Yesterday I bought 2 Sony 10″ Xplod Subwoofers (Peak Power 1100W each) Rated Power 300W each. I went to Best Buy and ask car audio sales rep. to help me. He pointed out an Amp. (I could not afford until next week.) and sent me home with a Kicker CK ZCK8 2-CH Amp Power Kit 500W Max. I have a 1989 GMC Sierra C1500 2DR Pick-up. It has two (possible) stock speakers and an out dated equalizer (with a cassette player attacked.) What do I need? What can I keep? What do I need to take back? He also said an enclosed case would be best for the Sony speakers. Best Buy’s stock seemed limited any other recommendations?

latitude answers:

Kicker makes pretty good amp kits and sony makes pretty sucky woofers so that might be fine…Sony does however make a decent Class D amp which would be about right for your particular issue. It’s roughly $120 on ebay and i get good reviews from it. Best buy usually doesn’t work with ‘older vehicles’ so they wouldn’t generally have everything you need. But speaker boxes would help you out a lot. They are on ebay as well…i’ll give you links to this stuff. You should replace the radio with a simple one that can give you a few options given this particular situation…say a pioneer deh-3000…it’s relatively cheap at around $110 and it has built in cross overs which you’ll be glad to have later. Next is door speakers….this i would go cheap on…because expensive speakers are usually heavier…and require more power to get loud. Well your stereo does not produce much power so a cheaper/lighter more efficient speaker is best. Combine all that and the proper settings on the amp and radio and you’ll be happy!!!!

Amp http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SONY-XMZZR3301-CLASS-D-MONO-SUBWOOFER-AMPLIFIER-/260529956279?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Car_Amplifiers&hash=item3ca8cba5b7

speaker boxes http://cgi.ebay.com/TWO-10-TRUCK-WEDGES-AUDIO-SUBWOOFER-SUB-SPEAKER-BOXES-/310224008958?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483acab6fe

please make sure the size of these boxes accomodate the speakers and the room you have…you might also have a couple things you may have to remove from the back…like tire jack or something??

Radio http://cgi.ebay.com/PIONEER-DEH-P3000IB-CAR-STEREO-CD-MP3-RADIO-PLAYER-3000-/300437057915?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Car_Audio_In_Dash_Receivers&hash=item45f371b17b

if i recall correctly the aftermarket radio installs where the cassette/equalizer goes…you would need a car kit…blah blah…best buy can help you with that. Just don’t let them overcharge you. The dash kit and wire kit combined shouldn’t be more than $25 i would say. Then you would need 4×6 speakers since that is what your truck originally took.

Speakers http://cgi.ebay.com/SPL-AS-4620-4×6-2-Way-Speakers-120-Watts-Pair-NEW-/370395619422?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Car_Speakers&hash=item563d4ca05e

dash kit http://cgi.ebay.com/Radio-Stereo-Dash-install-kit-GMC-SIERRA-Pickup-88-94-/290434045259?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item439f37d54b

wire kit http://cgi.ebay.com/GMC-SIERRA-FULLSIZE-88-02-VEHICLE-WIRE-HARNESS-GWH-344-/110372108559?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19b2b0b90f

asside from installation this should be all you need assuming the wire kit best buy sold you includes RCA cables!!! If you want to apparently your truck has the ability to use 2 pairs of speakers- 2 in the dash and 2 in the door pillars…you might need to purchase 2 sets of speakers to keep up with your sony 10s…can always get the 2nd set later tho!!!

That would be $341 with 2 pairs of 4×6 speakers not including installation assuming you still have the stock stereo…if you already have an aftermarket stereo it’d be roughly 20 or so dollars less.

This includes an amp, sub boxes, pioneer stereo, dash kit, wire kit for stereo, and 2 pairs of 4×6 speakers. See what best buy thinks about that deal??? I already know what they will think because one of my friends is their head installer here in florida!!! HAA

Your Questions About Car Audio Installation Cost

Steven Your Questions About Car Audio Installation Cost

Steven asks…

How much does power window installation cost?

I am thinking of getting a new 2012 Nissan Versa. The cheapest model with an audio package is $13,850 and the next model up is $15,500. The only difference between these cars it that the more expensive version has 4 power windows and the base model has all manual windows. I don’t know how much power window equipment and installation would cost, I am just trying to get an idea if it would be worth it to buy a cheap car, get windows installed elsewhere, and save some money.

latitude answers:

The kit for the Versa is a possible DIY item depending on your patience and skills. Off the top of my head. I bought the kit for a customer last year and it cost $199 from JC Whitney. (google them). If you are fitting ti yourself you will get away with approx $20 in tools, tape etc a the kits are complete and ready to install. If you get a garage to do it it is approx 2-3 hours work depending on there experience so i dont know how much US garages charge per hour. In th UK thy charge between £40-£60 per hour. SO that would be approx $400 for fitting.

Whatever route you go down you should save approx $1000. The choice is yours but make sure if you buy the cheaper car and get the windows installed they are done to a high standard to retain resale value.

latitude answers:

Subs get put in with the amp, the 70 bucks should be for four paying more than 40 a set for spkrs is A LOT. You need parts for the in dash itself running u around a hundred dollars. The amp is around 120 or so in parts with an 8 gauge kit

Laura Your Questions About Car Audio Installation Cost

Laura asks…

Do I need anything extra for my car audio?

I just bought a JVC KD-G240 car stereo for my 2001 PT Cruiser. I know it wont be easy but I want to do the installation myself mainly for the sake of saving money. I know I would need a harness but is their anything else that I will be needing? Where is the best place to get all this at an affordable cost but quality products?

latitude answers:

First thing you need to know is if something does not undo dont try to pry or force it. People always do it and bust something. Easy on easy off. Some units come with an adapter to plug your new unit onto the factory end on the car harness. Unclip and clip and your done! Ps dont turn power on until plugged, and test it before you reassemble it

Joseph Your Questions About Car Audio Installation Cost

Joseph asks…

Where is the cheapest place to get a car subwoofer and amplifier and get them installed?

I’m looking to get 2 10″ kicker comps and an amp online for $250 and get them installed in my car and I was wondering how much it would cost to get them installed and where would be the cheapest? Btw my car has no previous sub or speaker installation. It’s all stock. And the only places I can think of to go for intallation is best buy, frys, and this local car audio shop that I hear overprices everything.

latitude answers:

MTX TNP212D2 Dual 12″ Subwoofer And Amplifier are the best buy ever they really hit hard not complaints at all the amp comes that comes with it is perfect it doesn’t over heat because it has a built-in fan cooler the subs are perfect and it is an enclosed box so it give an solid hitting sound oppose to ported. This is the best package to get if you looking for a set.

William Your Questions About Car Audio Installation Cost

William asks…

Cost of Subs and Amp Installation?

What is the average cost of installing an amp and subs at a car audio shop?

I don’t know how much of this information matters but here are the details:
Car: 1995 Nissan 200sx (2 door)
– aftermarket deck and speakers already installed
Subs: Two 12in Polk Subs in a ported enclosure
Amp: 900 Watt Kenwood Amp KAC-9104D

I don’t have any cables or installation parts other than what comes in the manufacturer’s boxes, so I’ll need the prices of those too.
I will be running the amp at around 760 watts @ 2 ohms to match the subs

latitude answers:

Well your going to need an amp kit those run from around $60 to $100
and probably around another $100-$150 for the actual installation.

George Your Questions About Eclipse Car Audio Amp

George asks…

Car audio system takes to much power from my car and wont let it idle if the system runs at half for a day?

I have a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse and i have two 10 inifinity subs 250 rms one 500 wat power amp to that and all 4 after market speakers in the doors with a 500 power amp to that. And an after market pioneer deck. I have a capacitor but i still have a problem that if i run the system to much it will drain and the car will not idle correctly and will stall when i dont give it gas. I know its the electricy but im not sure what i can do to fix it. any help? oh and if i run for a few hours with no system running at all it will correct it self.

latitude answers:

Your system is exceeding the power output of the alternator so the battery begins to discharge and it is the general under volt that causes your car to miss and stall.

The solution is get a bigger alternator or smaller sound system, it’s as simple as that.

A word of warning, don’t be tempted to put in a bigger battery it will overload the alternator even more. If you put in a high output alternator you will have to upgrade the fusible links.

Sharon Your Questions About Eclipse Car Audio Amp

Sharon asks…

car audio system upgrade?

I have a memphis 12″ mclass sub in a ported box, getting 250 watts from a LA amp. i also have infinity kappa 4x6s and kenwood 6×9 amped by a hifonics amp. im looking toboth upgrade sq and get louder. should i get another memphis 12 or should i get something else? the sub is only 200 rms and its $100 on sonicselectronix.com. suggestions? also on a good amp to push the new setup? i was thinking a eclipse class d?

latitude answers:

Generally SQ (sound quality) and SPL (Sound Pressure Level, or Loud) systems are two different setups. It’s next to impossible to have the best of both worlds so you need to decide what you want most, quality sound or louder sound. The speakers you have now are a good start to good quality sound but not loud other than the ported box. You’ll get better quality bass from a sealed box. I suggest thinking about which way you want go then re-post your question accordingly.
BTW, PTCruishe, he said Memphis M series, not MA Audio.

How to install my own car audio?

do you guys know what i would need, or any websites that will help me do this?
you can email or IM me at wordlife547@yahoo.com

thats not my primary email, email me there and i will give you my primary email.

latitude answers:

You need an enclosure for your subs get either Bandpass Sealed or ported, for subs get some wire at least 5+ gauge not the skimpy wires u find in electronics like cars, take the wires and match positive + and negative – then hook that up to your amp, get a car battery and hook the power wires to the + and – to the battery, to take the head unit out get a clip and hook that to the old head unit, look for the dimples of the unit pull on those and it should pop out, then hook up the newer head unit connecting all the wires for previous unit. For the speakers Take the door panels out and look for the stock speakers and take them out take the wiring of of them and use that for your newer ones match + and – GOD LUCK!

Your Questions About How To Install A Car Stereo At Home

Sharon Your Questions About How To Install A Car Stereo At Home

Sharon asks…

Hyundai Sonata, 2003 stalled. Can’t figure why. Any ideas? Suggestions?

This morning (cold weather (26 degrees)) the car stalled as she was getting on the freeway. She called me and told me it stalled and wouldn’t start again. After a minute or so (not sure how long she was stuck) the car started and drove fine – no hint of a problem. She brought the car home and took mine to work. I’ve been checking things I know to check: electrical (fuses) tight connections, fluids at proper level, GAS IN THE TANK; and so on.

I did find a 50 amp fuse that looks like an after market install of a power amplifier for the stereo. The amp is long gone, but the wire is still there. AND the 50 amp fuse is blown, oddly, it’s burned apart in two locations. That’s just weird.

Any suggestions? Any ideas? Any tips?
Thanks Joseph, I’m leaning toward replacing the filter. The car has somewhere around a hundred thousand miles, so that’s a pretty good candidate. And cheap too.

I’m a certified back yard mechanic and I can always screw anything up. But filters are not hard.

Thanks.

latitude answers:

You know that it’s a guessing game. Even for mechanics ! Could be you had a bit of moisture in the gas tank. That happens, especially in cold weather. Could be a dirty gas filter. That’s something that many people overlook. Change the gas filter. It’s a small item. If you don’t know how, then catch a mechanic on his ‘not so busy time’. Watch him do it. Once you see it, you’ll definitely be able to do it yourself next time. And when you gas up a tank (full) add on bottle of ‘dry gas’. It’s cheap, about a pint, purchase at service station or auto parts. That will take care of any moisture. Hope I helped. Good Luck

How to wire a subwoofer to a alpine cda-9856?

The alpine cda-9856 was already installed in the car when I bought it. I have looked at the back and there are two wire plugged into the subwoofer plugins the bottom two. These wire wrap around the car to the back where these two auxilary like plugs are with a metal ring connected to a separate wire and what looks like a eathernet plug. I have a sub from a home stereo so it has two wires with only the copper strands hanging out. How do I connect them? Please help

latitude answers:

A sub from home stereo? Hmmmmm.
Ideally, for a subwoofer you would want it amplified. The cda-9856 has 2 sets of rca outputs. These are connectors that look like the picture on the right here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_connector

These would be plugged into an amplifier. There should be a blue wire on the back of the Alpine that turns the amp on. Then the wires from/to your sub would be connected to the amp. If it is a 2 channel sub, then you would connect right pos to right pos and right neg to right neg and left etc……
However, if it is asingle channel sub, then you would have to find out how the amp needs to be hooked up for bridging mode. This is usually done by flipping a switch on the amp itself and connecting pos from the amp to right pos and neg to left neg on the amp.

Mary Your Questions About How To Install A Car Stereo At Home

Mary asks…

Looking to buy a sound system for my room/dorm?

(Theres a long explanation below, if you don’t have the patience to read it all, skip to the bottom)

I’m 16, and last year for Christmas I got a Kenwood KDC HD545U radio, and I installed it in my car and couldn’t be happier. But with college coming up and feeling a little sad that the only speaker I have is a mini-amp (http://images.insound.com/303/INS52265.jpg) in my bedroom, I want a sound system/speakers for christmas. Yes, its far away, but I’m thinking ahead. I’d like a sound system that hits bass hard, but also manages to keep the mids and highs equal too. I’d like a sound system that, when inside my dorm room in the future, hits so hard I get yelled at by the dorm manager.

But here’s the catch: this is for Christmas. Last year I skipped my birthday present and my parents were still a little sketchy about buying me the radio. But I asked for more last year, so I’m thinking I could convince my parents to get me a system ranging from $300-$400. The MAX (and I mean MAX, because I guarantee my parents won’t go any higher, unless I did some major ass-kissing, and even then…) is $500. I have no amp, no speakers, and no reciever. Nothing. Just an IPod nano, a playlist, and a shitty ass speaker (seen above).

Here’s some questions you may have, so I’ll answer them now.

a. What % of your usage will be music vs. HT (home theater)?

[100% of the usage will be for music]

b. What types of music do you listen to the most? (classical/jazz, rap, rock, etc.)

[I listen to a lot of rap, but I also love hardcore techno, rave, and dubstep. However, I probably listen to rock music just as much, so I'd like a speaker thats versatile. Right now my car speakers (OEM) do fine with rap and have great bass (Kenwood stereo makes it fine), but with rock the treble is so high that I can only have the music at half the volume i'd like it without the drums and cymbals blowing out my eardrums (adjusting the treble does nothing), so I'd like some speakers that not only hit the lows and mids, but also manage the highs so the guitar hits hard and sounds crisp.]

c. How big is your listening/viewing room?

[I'm not positive on the use of these speakers for sure, but anywhere ranging from a small dorm room to a medium-sized bedroom is my best guess. Not going to be trying to fill the gym with sound here.]

e. What kind of receiver/amp will you have?

[This was another one of my concerns. I'd like a reciever that can connect to an IPod via USB because my stereo in my car (at least) has better quality with the USB rather than the AUX cord. A CD changer isn't necessary, just IPod connectivity.

f. Do you have a subwoofer or plan to get one?

[If it's necessary I will. I have no speakers or recievers or amps right now period. I'm starting fresh.]

——————————————————————————————————————————————–
To elaborate:

*$500 MAX
*Reciever, Speakers, Wiring, etc.
*Dorm Room/Medium Sized Bedroom
*Rap, Rock, Techno, Dubstep
*Hits hard without distorting, puts out crisp and high quality guitar sound without popping my eardrums with cymbal noise
*Can be any type of speaker, floor, bookshelf, etc.
*If necessary, I could possibly get a friend to build a box, but we’ll see.

If you have any other questions, please ask and I will answer.
Carl I was looking for a different system, I’ve heard some bad reviews about Bose when it comes to louder music (with hard-hitting bass), so I was looking for reccomendations on speakers and recievers. Thanks.

latitude answers:

Okay, so I paid a bit more for mine, I have a Bose Acoustiic Wave, but we also have the clock radio. I hate the fact that the new onse don’t have buttons on them, but if you get a chance to listen to one, it might be something to own. They’re really close to that $500 tag.

EDIT: My Acoustic Wave doesn’t have that problem and we’ve used it to fill up a small hall. True, there’s no bass or treble controls (IFM how it works) but the audio is true, even at high volume. I think in the order of things, the radio was about $500, the 321 system with sub-woofer was about $800 and the AW was $1200. The last time I checked, our living room is larger than any dorm room, and there’s only so much power you can ever use. Find a reasonable amp with equalizer and a pair of kick azz speakers and you’d be good to go.

Back Speakers Do not Seem To Be Working?

Just bought this 98 SUZUKI Esteem station wagon, and it comes with two impressive speakers in the trunk. What I noticed is that no sound seems to be coming out of them. I have an aftermarket “OPTIMUS” CD player installed by previous owner. Could the problem be any of the following (or anything else)?
1- Stereo is a 2 channel system –> only front speakers work. How can I fix that? Any harness etc.?
2- Some fuse is burnt out? Where can I locate that?
3- Speakers are dead? How do I test for that?
4- Anything else??
Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I have had a couple of car radios installed before, and would not mind trying to fix this at home before hitting my BESTBUY or RADIOSHACK for some professional help icon smile Your Questions About How To Install A Car Stereo At Home

Thanks a bunch

latitude answers:

If the stereo is only 2 channel you’ll need to upgrade to a 4 channel stereo.
If a fuse is burnt out the whole thing wouldn’t work, car manufacturers don’t fuse speaker wires
the only way a speaker could be “dead” is if one of the wires isn’t connected to the speaker
If your radio has a fader set it to the rear of the car, if not then it probably is only a two channel radio and you just need a new one. And don’t go to radioshack for car audio help

Life Aboard A Submarine?

Spend as much time as you can indoors during the daytime, stay out of direct sunlight. Go to work only before sunrise and come home after sunset.

Paint everything around you Sea Foam Green (Navy NSN Green, no substitutions) or Off-White to be sure you are living in a clean, happy environment. Every Friday, set an alarm on loud for a short, but hated, drill sound. Then get up and manned only with a bucket, sponge and a greeny. Clean one area over and over, even if it is already spotless.

Eat food that you can only get out of a can and requires water in order to eat it. Empty out your refrigerator and turn the temperature control down, turning the refrigerator into a freezer. Get rid of all fresh fruits and vegetables.

Repeat back everything spoken to you. Repeat back everything spoken to you.

Sit in your car for six hours at a time with the motor running. Keep hands on the wheel. But don’t leave your driveway. Log readings of your oil pressure, water temperature, speedometer and odometer every 15 minutes.

Put Lube Oil in your humidifier instead of water. Set it on high.

Buy a trash compactor; use it only once a week. Store the rest of the garbage in your bathroom.

Don’t watch movies except in the middle of the night. Have your family vote on which movie to watch, then show a different one.

Have the paperboy give you a standard Navy haircut.

Take hourly readings on your water and your electric meters. But only for a six hour period.

Sleep with your dirty laundry.

For you old mechanics, set your lawn mower in the middle of the living room while it is running. Only for six hours a day.

Invite guests but don’t prepare enough food for everyone. Serve food cold. Limit the time they sit at the table to 10 minutes.

Wake up at midnight every night and make a peanut butter sandwich, use stale bread. Better yet, make your own bread but cut 3 inch thick slices and use these. Optional: warm up some canned Ravioli or soup.

Make your family a menu for the week without knowing what food is in the cabinets.

Set your alarm clock for various times at night; adjust the volume to the maximum. When it goes off, jump out of bed, get your clothes on as fast as you can, run outside and grab the garden hose. Then go back to bed and do it all again when the alarm goes off.

Once a month take apart every appliance completely and then put them back together.

Use 18 scoops of coffee per pot and allow it to sit for 5 to six hours before drinking it.

Invite at least 85 people you really don’t like and have them stay for a couple of months.

Store your eggs in the garbage for two months and then cook a dozen each morning.

Have a fluorescent lamp installed under your coffee table and lie underneath it to read books.

Put a complicated lock on your basement door and wear the key around your neck on a special chain.

When making cakes, prop up one side of the pan when cooking. Use extra icing to level it off.

Every so often, yell “EMERGENCY DEEP!” run into the kitchen and sweep all pots, pans and dishes off of the counters onto the floor, and then yell at your wife for not having the kitchen area “Stowed for Sea!”

Put on the stereo headphones (don’t plug them in), go to the stove and stand in front of it. Say (to no one in particular) “Stove manned and ready” stay there for 3 to 4 hours. Say (once again and to no one in particular) “Stove secured”, then role up your headphone cord and put them away.

Pull out your refrigerator and clean behind it for 4 hours and then put it back when you are done. Have your wife come and check every 10 minutes with a flashlight to see how you are doing.

When doing your laundry fill it only 1/3 full, sit in front of your washing machine in your underwear and read a book or magazine you’ve read at least 5 times before in the last week. When the wash is done, only run the dryer for half the normal time.

Fix-up a shelf in your closet that will serve as your bunk for the next six months. Take the door off of the hinges and replace them with curtains. While asleep, have family members shine a flashlight in your eyes at random intervals and say either “Sign this!” or “Sorry, wrong rack!”

If you can do these. You can do just about anything!

latitude answers:

Lol those are really good. You also forgot what’s called “hot racking” and there’s another little saying that the navy has for submariners: 150 people go down and 75 couples come up.

Your Questions About Install Car Stereo Chevy Cavalier

Daniel Your Questions About Install Car Stereo Chevy Cavalier

Daniel asks…

Is there anything else I need to install a stereo (2004 Chevy Cavalier)?

I know that with the Cavaliers, you need a GM VT-GMRC-01 GM Class II Data bus Interface. If you don’t use one, the door chime will not work along with audible safety warnings. So here’s what I think I need:

1. Stereo
2. GM VT-GMRC-01 GM Class II Data bus Interface
3. Wire harness
4. Dash kit
5. Stereo antenna harness

I have a question about that stereo antenna harness. Do I need that with my model car? I have read that some companies require one along with certain cars. Is it needed? If I need anything else to install the stereo, please let me know.

latitude answers:

Your stereo should come with its own wire harness. The VT-GMRC-01 will come with a harness that fits the factory radio plugs. You do not need to buy any additional wire harness.

You’ll need the dash kit, and you will need the antenna adapter for this car.

You need everything on your list except #3, and you shouldn’t need anything else.

Ruth Your Questions About Install Car Stereo Chevy Cavalier

Ruth asks…

What parts do I need to install a new stereo on my car?

I have a 2001 Chevy Cavalier and I need a new radio in my car. I have been getting the run around when I call retail stores asking them what I need. One store estimated I would need $200 worth of parts to install a $99 radio. Any help?

latitude answers:

You need the same parts to install a $99 radio or a $500 radio, so don’t assume you’re getting a run-around just because of the price.

Here’s the tricky part with your car: your factory radio is controlled by the vehicle data bus system, and it also controls your vehicle’s warning chimes. If you remove the factory radio, you’ll lose all the audible warning chimes unless you use a special adapter. The adapter is expensive, because it’s basically designed to decode the GM data signals and generate the chimes. It also provides an accessory power source that’s used for the new radio.

If you don’t care about the warning chimes, you can purchase a less expensive harness. You’ll need to find an alternate source for key-switched power, because there’s no accessory power wire in the stock harness. So it’s cheaper, but more difficult to install.

In addition, you’ll also need a mounting kit for the new radio:

http://www.audiooutfitter.com/99-2003/metra/p70563.html

And an antenna adapter:

Installing a stereo in my car?

I tried to install a stereo in my 91 chevy cavalier. When I was done, the radio turns on but as soon as you press a button it shuts off. ANY button that I press, it shuts off. Can anyone help me please?! Thanks!

latitude answers:

You may want to make sure that your ground is good and that there are no loose wires, or none of them are bare and shorting out

Jenny Your Questions About Install Car Stereo Chevy Cavalier

Jenny asks…

I got a single din stereo for my car for christmas but it has a stock duo din radio. Can i still install it?

I went to Best Buy and he said that because my car is an 01 Chevy Cavalier I wouldn’t be able to install it without buying this expensive converter because apparently my car has the heating/cooling system wired in with the radio wires but I went somewhere else and they told me that I wouldn’t have to. Should I just buy a new stereo that fits in my car or will this one work?

latitude answers:

I am pretty sure all you need is a dash kit that prety much all it does is fill in the extra space that is not needed around the radio since the new stereo you are putting in is alot smaller.

Your Questions About Custom Car Audio Boxes

Charles Your Questions About Custom Car Audio Boxes

Charles asks…

A few questions about what I should put in my car for audio.?

Im going to go with TWO 12″ ALPINE TYPE-R 500W RMS AND 1500W MAX.

Making a custom box.

I would like speakers.
Im thinking only two of them.
I wanted the INFINITY REFERENCE 4″ 2-WAY 4022i 2-35 RMS Watts speakers. Only two of them for the front, and subs in the trunk.

A 1000 2-channel amp or a 1200w 2-channel amp for my subs.

Run the two speakers off my deck I will be getting.

1. Is this a good set-up?
2. Any better speakers?
3. Can I set this up with better amp or something for my subs?
THANKS

latitude answers:

If your total system power is 1000 watts RMS or more, you will need to:

1. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator
2. Upgrade to a heavy duty deep cycle battery
3. Upgrade the “Big 3″ – that is to replace the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis with at least 1/0 AWG wire.

Failure to do this will result in you replacing them anyway as the alternator will eventually fail.

Here is a guide that will calculate what size alternator and power wires you need http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php?file=6d26c621

You’ll need Microsft Excel to use it.

Custom audio for a 97 trans am?

I have just bought a 97 trans am. All black, leather racing seats, and deep tinted windows. I am hoping to put in a custom sound system in the back with a 1500 budget. That does not include labor since I will be doing the labor. Some guys have told me that dynamat layered throughout the car would increase the db and keep the metal from rattling. Also, i have installed several amps and subs in friends’ cars, but I am looking for a nice system that sounds great and looks just as great. I am figuring that a custom box made out of cardboard and fiberglass will cost a couple hundred. Any suggestions on amps, subs, batter(y/ies), tweeters?

Also, It has an alpine cd player and mtx rear speakers

latitude answers:

Good head start w/ the HU. Hopefully it has sub outs.

Infinity, Polk, and Fosgate have good clarity for tweeters and easy to find.

One 12″. The ability, given the right power, that one 12 can do is absolutely amazing. On top of it, you have a Trans Am. Go w/ one!

Rockford Fosgate T2
RE Audio SX / MX
Boston Acoustics G5 W the GTR (Excellent SQ)
FI BL
Alpine Type R / Type X (X has great SQ)

Pair up w/ an amp that is compatible in ohms and satifactory to the power you want to put in it, and you’d blow your mind in that vehicle.

Decent 2 and 0 awg. Wire kits are something like 80 to 120. Be sure to get clean rca’s. If the ones w/ the kit look mid-rate, buy some seperately.

You’d be on your own finding an enclosure that accomodates the specs of the sub and your ride.

Dynamat would be great.

Of course, all options are considered new, and on Ebay. Good luck!

~*~*~You spent twice as much time finding something wrong in everything I put up than it took me to write it. Appears you only believe in one product, and only believe in “cheerleading” for it! I was giving easy-to-aquire options – instead of saying Buy This!!~*~*~

Joseph Your Questions About Custom Car Audio Boxes

Joseph asks…

has anyone bought anything from top edge car audio

has anyone bought a custom sub box from top edge
whenever i click on the tracking link in my profile for their site they say there is no tracking info at this time
anybody else have this same problem and did you still get your stuff

latitude answers:

Personally, I’ve never ordered from them.

I have however had the same problem with other companies. How long ago did you order the box? Sometimes, depending on the shipping company, it can take up to 2 business days for the tracking info to be entered.

I actually had an amp overnighted. The tracking info wasn’t available until after I actually got the amp. It kept telling me that the number wasn’t valid.

James Your Questions About Custom Car Audio Boxes

James asks…

can i run my amp straight from my alternator? can i run my alternator to 2 separate batteries?

can i hook my starting battery & a acsessory battery to my alternator with 2 separate cables? im just testing & looking at options to create an all out custom car audio system thats unique. i want to go all out as far as looks go. custom boxes, plexie glass over amps, fans, lights, set screw terminals, 3 batteries, capacitors, 4/0 gauge wires, tons of bells & whistles. i have all this & more but i want to hook it up in a totally uncommon fashion. i have lots of ideas but need to know if some of them are going to work so can i hook my amp to my alternator? can i hook 2 separate batteries to my alternator?

latitude answers:

Here’s the issue – an alternator is going to have spikes & dips in voltage. A battery helps to minimize them as it goes to your electronics so they won’t get damaged. A large cap would also help with those spikes/dips. That’s just basic electronics.
So, if you have a battery and/or a cap in the back, there should be no problem with running a cable straight to the back from the alternator. Plus it would be a shorter cable run which is always good. Just don’t hook the alternator directly to an amp.
One thing to make sure is that your alternator can supply enough current to keep all that stuff charged. A high output alternator is going to be a must!
